Alex Romero

Dr. Alex Romero is a biochemist and holds a PhD in Science with a specialization in Cellular and Molecular Biology from Universidad Austral de Chile. His scientific work has focused on understanding the defense mechanisms of fish and how these responses are modulated by stress stimuli and pathogen infections. He currently leads the Laboratory of Immunology and Stress in Aquatic Organisms at the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences of Universidad Austral de Chile and serves as an Associate Researcher at the Interdisciplinary Center for Aquaculture Research (INCAR²). In recent years, his research has focused on the development and scientific validation, both in vitro and in vivo, of natural-origin additives as non-pharmacological alternatives to improve fish health and production performance. His work also involves the identification of novel therapeutic targets for disease treatment, as well as the study of immunomodulation and mucosal defense mechanisms in salmonids.

Social anthropologist and holds a Master’s degree in Environment from the University of Melbourne. She has more than ten years of experience in marine and coastal governance and planning, facilitating participatory processes aimed at the conservation and sustainable use of marine ecosystems. She currently serves as National Coordinator of the GEF Marine Coastal Governance Project in Chile, implemented by FAO together with the Ministry of Environment, the Undersecretariat for Fisheries and Aquaculture, and SERNAPESCA, where she leads initiatives to strengthen coastal governance, marine spatial planning, and the development of a sustainable blue economy.
