The implementation of Plan Innova, a municipal initiative to transform the city into a benchmark for innovation, continues to move forward within the framework of the Salmón 2050 Plan.

Puerto Montt, regional capital of Los Lagos and also known as the Salmon Capital of the World, remained in 2025 as the main production hub for the aquaculture and fishing sectors, with 39,912 tons, equivalent to 29.0% of the regional total, and a year-on-year growth of 21.8%.

This sustained leadership in these industries is a potential that the municipality, led by Mayor Rodrigo Wainraihgt, seeks to leverage through the implementation of Plan Innova, a municipal project whose goal is to turn the regional capital into a center of innovation in the south of the country.

Through collaboration between academia, the public sector, and the private sector, the aim is to promote the technological and economic development of the area by taking advantage of the city’s strengths: its infrastructure, human capital, and productive ecosystem.

Since May 2025, the Higher Advisory Council for this plan has been holding meetings. Following a positive end to the year, on February 6, it held its first meeting of 2026, a year in which one of its main objectives will be to consolidate Puerto Montt as a hub of innovation in the south.

In addition, the idea behind the Innova Plan is also to promote knowledge and technology transfer; provide opportunities for the development of advanced human capital; modernize public management through applied innovation; and encourage the study and application of future technologies.

Nicolás Pacheco, its new executive secretary, said at the meeting that “today in 2026, our challenge is to encourage the emergence of technology startups, solutions, and new industries, applying future technologies such as artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, and quantum computing.”

In this context, Aquasur will bring together the city’s leading aquaculture companies, such as Aquatiq, Luxmeter, AquaPharma, Empormontt, AquaChile, Mega Goglio, Fabrimaq, among others, which will present their innovations for the industry’s needs to visitors. The exhibition will also host an International Congress that will address cutting-edge topics with a special emphasis on emerging companies that stand out for their use and development of science in aquaculture.
