Puerto Montt, March 2023. MSD Animal Health is preparing to participate in AquaSur Tech 2023, the first fair of technological solutions oriented to the sustainability of the salmon industry, to be held at the Dreams Hotel in Punta Arenas (Magallanes region) between 29 and 30 March 2023.

At the event -organised by FISA, with the support of the Association of Salmon Farmers of Magallanes, and which will be the prelude to AquaSur 2024- the Aquaculture Unit of MSD Animal Health Southern Region will present its integration of fish health solutions composed of its traditional biopharmaceutical offer; which is now complemented with innovative technologies from its VAKI®, Biomark® and IdentiGEN product lines.

The director of the Aquaculture Unit of MSD Animal Health South Region, Oscar Parra, says that, “in the last decade, most Chilean salmon farms have incorporated the use of automation in different processes, such as fish feeding, size estimation, oxygenation and data capture”. In this sense, MSD Animal Health has a wide range of equipment for high precision aquaculture, efficiency and fish welfare, which will be, precisely, disseminated in AquaSur Tech 2023.

“For freshwater, we have pumps, graders and counters that do an efficient but gentle job, benefiting animal welfare and avoiding physical damage and stress to the fish. For the seawater phase, meanwhile, we have infrared biomass estimator frames that, with 99% accuracy, allow us to monitor the growth and dispersion of the populations in the culture units. The information they collect allows the detection of sub-acute health problems, such as reduced growth of fish due to sub-clinical disease. In addition, the growth decreases revealed by the frames allow us to make corrections in feeding”, says the executive.

He adds, “We also plan to provide information on a new development we are working on. This is the new Falcon line, a patented machine learning technology compiled from years of scientific work, which we hope to bring to market soon. With Falcon, salmon farmers will be able to automatically count, sort and report salmon numbers, which will mean less effort and risk for employees and stocks. We are very much looking forward to being able to offer this useful technology to the salmon industry as soon as possible.

In addition to having a stand, MSD Animal Health will give a talk on “Biopharmaceutical solutions and technology for the entire production cycle: From the egg to the plate”, by Oscar Parra, which will detail the wide range of products that the company offers the salmon farming sector and that allow a highly efficient production in the various stages of cultivation.

For the company, it is very important to be present at this meeting in Punta Arenas. “The Magallanes Region is an important productive area, which has had an outstanding development. However, due to its geographical location, it is not always easy to access this area. AquaSur Tech is a novel instance that we hope will generate a lot of interaction between suppliers and customers,” says Oscar Parra. He adds that it will also be interesting to be able to observe the technological level that exists in the region, “in order to have more clarity on how we can contribute and be a contribution with our extensive range of technologies”.
