PLACE

Puerto Montt, Chile

Puerto Montt, the capital of the Region of Los Lagos, is located 1.044 kilometers south of Santiago. It has an estimated population of 175,000 inhabitants and a surface area of 1,673 km2.

By air, Puerto Montt is connected to Santiago by daily flights, which take about two hours.

The AQUA SUR fair will be held, as of this VI version, in a site especially chosen for this objective. The place is located on Route 5, 5 km to the north of Puerto Montt. The new home for AQUA SUR is a 55,000 m2 site, which may be easily accessed, whether coming from Puerto Montt or Puerto Varas. The space allows for wide parking lots for more than 1,000 automobiles.

The region has an ocean climate, cool and humid, with annual temperatures averaging between 10 and 13º C and precipitations of 1,200 to 3,000 mm per year, owing to the special marine influence. In March temperatures vary between 9º C (43º F) and 19º C (64º F).

The main economic activity in the region is salmon farming, and the area is referred to as the “salmon capital.” Agriculture is also important with the farming of potatoes, rapeseed, oats, and sugar beets, among others. The forestry sector is concentrated in native species: coigüe, alerce (larch), cypress, lenga (South American beech), and raulí (evergreen beech). Finally, tourism is highly favored as the region has plentiful natural resources such as lakes, rivers, fjords, canals, bays, estuaries, volcanoes, hot springs, waterfalls, and snow. Its cultural and gastronomic identity is an added attraction for tourists to the region.
